Using Data to Improve Student Learning: The ability to take and use data is one of the factors in our work with students. This course will cover how to be precise in taking data, what data is available, how to use data, and how data helps increase effectiveness. The course will also focus on using Excel, Campus Gradebook and the Assessment Gateway as tools when working with data.

Technology Tools for the 21st Century Teacher: So what is a 21st Century Teacher? One that is flexible, collaborative, research based, knows the learning styles of their students, teaches to different learning styles and ability levels. The teacher of the future must be not only accomplished in instructional techniques and technology, but also in the integration of technology into the curriculum. Where are your technology skills in being able to do this? In this course you will create your own personal technology learning plan, put the learning plan into action using Atomic Learning and other resources to learn applications and instructional strategies, apply your learning to your classroom and share what you have learned with others.

This course will meet face to face for two sessions. The remainder of the learning will be done online and in application.

Secondary Comprehension Strategies: Do you ever wonder why your students don’t understand what you ask of them to read? Come and discover strategies to engage your students in learning ways to better understand vocabulary that is embedded in your content.

Session 2 will cover: vocabulary strategies in secondary content

If you want to take both sessions (and of course you will want to!) you will have the opportunity to complete learning work between the two sessions for extra credit. You will not be disappointed – you will learn earth-shaking techniques to help your students be more successful in your class.

Classroom Strategies that Work for English Language Learners: Participants engage in guided study experience around text, Classroom Instruction that Works with English Language Learners by Jane D. Hill and Kathleen M. Flynn.  Participants will apply their learning in the classroom with their ELL students and share their new understanding with the group.

Cooperative Learning: The Cooperative Learning course is designed to provide effective teaching strategies to implement cooperative learning. Strategies to be covered include positive group interdependence, individual accountability, group processing, social skills, and form. These five strategies will be covered in the first five sessions of the course. The remaining sessions will be designed for teachers to create cooperative lessons, experiment with cooperative lessons in their classrooms, and reflect on their own experiences as well as those of others. All of this will be done using the cooperative learning method, so that teachers can get advice, encouragement, opinions, etc. from other teachers in the course.

Characteristics of Autism:  An introductory series to the characteristics of autism. Instructors will review characteristics of autism and discuss relevance of current research findings for students with autism spectrum disorders. Sensory needs of students on the autism spectrum (and how to meet them in class) will also be highlighted, along with strategies staff can use in school. (This will be a follow-up to the class that was offered last year and not necessarily the same information).
