Class of 2010 - Junior Checklist
- Recognize that your junior year is an important year.
- Develop good study habits and organization skills to prepare you for post-secondary education.
- Make sure you are on track for your credits and graduation requirements.
- Seek out assistance from teachers, tutoring program, and your counselor if you are having difficulty with classes.
- Explore post-secondary options: 4-year college, 2-year community college, 2-year technical college, military, entering the workforce.
- Narrow down possible career options and investigate which type of education is needed for that career (review MCIS and your PLAN results from last year to assist you).
- Register early to take the ACT or SAT tests in the spring (recommend registering early to secure a test site of your choice. See your counselor for which test you should be taking). Find out if you need to take the ACT Writing test.
- SAT subject tests.
- Request materials from schools that interest you and visit their websites.
- Visit with college representatives in the Spring Lake Park Counseling Office throughout the school year.
- Arrange on-campus visit to schools that interest you. Meet with an admissions counselor, a financial aid representative, and faculty in a department you are interested in. Take a tour, visit with students, and attend a class or two. Find out if colleges are having Open Houses or special events.
- Attend local Financial Aid Sessions.
- Participate in extra-curricular activities in the school and in your community to develop teamwork, leadership, and other important skills.
- Volunteer your time in the community.
- Be involved in a Job Shadow.
- Review your high school class plan. Take the most difficult classes you can handle. Stay focused on your schoolwork.
- Attend College Planning Night at SLP in the spring.
- Study for your ACT or SAT exam. Use http://www.act.org/ and http://www.collegeboard.com/ to help you prep for exams. SLP will also offer prep courses through community education in the winter.
- Take the ACT exam in April or June, 2009.
- Begin researching college admissions requirements and application deadlines. Many colleges start accepting applications in August of your senior year!
- Start researching scholarship opportunities.
- Visit with your School Counselor about your college and career plans along with any questions you may have.
- Enroll in a summer enrichment program.
